A Vision is a prerequisite to developing a strategic plan.  It defines what and where a city sees itself in the future.

Per Columbiana’s 2016 Comprehensive Plan, Vision 2035, our Vision is:

To maintain Columbiana’s small-town atmosphere by preserving our unique community character history and heritage; while improving quality of life through economic development, transportation and walkability, cultural enrichment and outstanding public services.

 

As Vision statements go, it’s not bad.  The last half of the Vision statement, the part after the semi-colon, is quite good.  The first part, however, is the opposite of Vision because it is not focused on the future.  Words in the beginning of the Vision Statement like, “maintain”, “preserving”, “history” and “heritage”, are about the status-quo or past.

The Vision and Values you see on the main page of this website were developed by Columbiana’s Economic Development Academy Team in 2022.   Here is the Vision the Team drafted.

Become Alabama's thriving City of Choice creating economic prosperity through business vitality and enhanced community amenities while embracing small-town charm.

 

I was part of that Team and share that Vision and Values.   Going forward, my personal Vision includes enhancements to public safety and addressing affordable housing issues in Columbiana. 

 

In the end, it must be Columbiana’s Vision, not mine.  I hope you will work with me and the next administration to update our Vision and Comprehensive Plan.
